Supervision for Counselor Interns
“Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.” – Sigmund Freud
"I want you to get excited about who you are, what you are, what you have, and what can still be for you. I want to inspire you to see that you can go far beyond where you are right now." --Virginia Satir
“When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance…provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.”
Selah Therapy, PLLC offers evidence based child centered play therapy. This nondirective therapy typically is most beneficial for those ranging in age from 3-10 who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, and relational concerns. This amazing therapy uses play, the natural language of children, in session while the therapist works toward ensuring the child experience full acceptance, understanding, and empathy. Developmentally, adults are capable of sitting down and verbally communicating thoughts and feelings surrounding painful events. Children, however, are not developmentally able to sit down and converse in this same manner. Play provides the child the venue to communicate and resolve feelings with the help of a specially trained child centered play therapist. Research states that this combination allows children to process through difficult experiences ultimately decreasing symptomatic behaviors and improving overall functioning.
There are many different types of therapies offered and many different types of therapists one may encounter. Kathie and Rhonda understand that each time a client enters our office, the vulnerability and trust involved in sharing their story is to be honored. The therapist/client relationship has been shown in much research as a strong predictor of success for the client. Selah Therapy recognizes the priority of this alliance, and for Kathie and Rhonda keys to this success such as genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard flow very naturally.
Individual / Couple / Family Therapies
Selah Therapy, PLLC provides therapy customized to the client’s needs. Some wish to meet individually with one of our experienced counselors. This allows the client to explore his or her thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and core beliefs and how these elements can impact daily functioning, relationships, and mental health. Others need to meet in couple’s counseling for issues such as premarital skills, marriage enrichment, surviving adultery, rekindling passion, or even support through the decision of divorce. Truthfully, all couples, whether in the excitement of wedding planning or in the valley of divorce, can benefit from couples therapy. Finally, family therapy is often necessary to address family wounds that cripple the entire family system. This pain may go back as far as the client’s family of origin and the resulting unrealistic expectations taken into a new family unit. With the goal of regaining a lost sense of unity or establishing a unity never experienced, families are met in the depth of conflict and guided through therapy so that each member feels heard and understood. In the safe and confidential space of Selah, clients find genuine hope and healing.
Selah Therapy, PLLC provides internet based counseling, also known as tele-therapy, utilizing the client’s home laptops or computers. This alleviates the obstacles of transportation or distance concerns for many clients. In addition, when one is not feeling well enough to leave the home but still wants to continue receiving the hope and healing offered in therapy, online counseling is the preferred answer. Often, those who have limited mobility or other disabilities find it too overwhelming to leave the house for a face to face session making online counseling the ideal solution. Tele-therapy offers increased confidentiality as the client does not have to worry about running into someone that they know in the waiting area. All tele-therapy services are provided with your confidentiality as priority through a HIPAA compliant program.
Please note: If one is in a life threatening situation, it is not appropriate to schedule a tele-therapy session at that time. Instead, the national suicide prevention line can be reached at 1-800-273-8255. If the client is in imminent risk, it is best to contact 911 or go straight to the nearest emergency room.

This unique and exciting therapy 12 week program involves the parent and caregivers directly as the agents of positive change for children between the ages of three to twelve. The clinicians teach the parents and caregivers to engage their child in non-directive play therapy sessions each week which ultimately allows the attachment with the child to strengthen. Each week the adult will be given a new skill to practice, and discussion will be held the following week regarding the progress. The Filial Therapy group is a strength based and empowering group showing parents and caregivers how to more effectively gain compliance from the child, minimize behavioral concerns, and build relationship success. Thousands of families have seen positive change through this therapy developed by Bernard and Louise Guerney in the 1960’s, and Selah Therapy, PLLC is pleased to offer this skill to families.
This six hour interactive course was originally designed for teens on probation, but overtime it has shown efficacy for teens in a wide range of presentation. Even those teens who have not shown evidence of emotional or behavioral concerns have benefited from the preventative skills taught and discussed in the TOP program. This program challenges youth to identify and claim their strengths rather than focusing on the weight of criticism so many young people face daily. Attitude and worldview is discussed, and specific interventions are used to help the youth identify their current worldview and determine if it is one that is yielding more positive or negative results. We delve into the topics of respect and boundaries and discuss why these skills are vital for success. In addition, making decisions and identifying and managing emotions is discussed. This program was created by Kathie Gathings and Rhonda Welch, and they are so pleased to see the positive results these skills have for a wide range of youth.
Selah Therapy, PLLC is pleased to offer a ten week program for adults utilizing evidence based theories that combat negative self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Learning about negative thought patterns, recognizing emotions, and challenging core beliefs are some of the topics discussed in this interactive time together. Participants in these groups find support, learn from others, and are often empowered by seeing others learn from their experience.
Scripture Based Support Groups:
Selah Therapy, PLLC is pleased to provide groups based on the truths found in the Holy Bible. Whether one professes to be a believer or a non-believer in the Scriptures, the content shared in these groups propels the participants forward with concrete and practical interventions. Often times, the truths found in Scripture are parallel to what scientific research highlights as evidence based treatment. Selah clinicians simply highlight how the two merge together to showcase life changing hope and truth.
